Tadaaaaa! *unveils*

Wait…what’s that?

Cables!

…Can it be?

CABLES!

YES! Yes, it’s done!

Gratuitous Cables Shrug by Melissa Mall

Can I get a ‘woot – woot?’ I just ‘designed’ a knitted garment. (Egad!) Of course, a shrug has got to be one of the most impractical pieces of clothing ever conceived. It’s like a sweater…for your shoulder blades. If you wear it with a short-sleeved top, the sleeves pop out when you move your arms. If you wear it with a sleeveless top, you get armpit gappage (terribly unattractive). If you wear it with a long-sleeved top, I’m sure people will wonder why you just didn’t go for a ‘real’ sweater. Observe how I’ve concealed the effect with clever photography.

Having said that…I think I may attempt wearing it this upcoming winter over a long-sleeved shirt. Because I’ve helplessly, hopelessly, recklessly, fallen in love with it. (Wait…that was a song, right? I used to like that song. Huh. Guess I still do…) I can’t help it. It’s ggggggggoooorgeous. Seriously. Can you look at those pictures and honestly tell me you didn’t feel an attraction to my shrug? Come on, admit it.

Directions, and the chart, will be up shortly for those of you who now have a guilty compulsion to knit a cabled shrug. Here’s one more pic of the goodness for the road:

EDIT: The chart and directions are now available here! Woohoo!

You’re right. I’ve fallen in love. And I agree about the practicality of shrugs. They can be soooo cute though.

It’s awfully purty. Great design work! πŸ˜€

Beautiful! And only 2 balls of Wool-ease! Cables always look to me like they involve an awful lot of yarn. :) I am definitely making one of these!

Wow! I knew it would happen, but I thought you’d tell us about it. When did you do it? Oh the shrug is cute too. You may discover as you go through the next few years that the area the shrug covers is just right for late nights with the baby. Love Mom

That’s breathtaking! Very, very beautiful cable work. I love it. (Can you tell? Heh.) πŸ˜€

Thanks so much for sharing the chart! Maybe I can be brave enough to try something fancier than CF6 now. πŸ˜†

Melissa, your cable shrug is just beautiful! I’m a very beginning knitter (longer time crocheter), and I can hardly wait to learn how to cable. Your pattern would convert to a pillow or a throw very nicely too.

You definitely deserve a WOOT WOOT and even a WOW thrown in for good measure!!

    Great work!

What is the finished size of the shrug before sewing the underarm seam? I’m interested in adding a 3\4 length sleeve in garter stitch if I can. Beautiful work on those cables!
