“My Life” in Motion

We made it!

In just a few short weeks we went from this

to this…

from here –

through here…

until we arrived here!

We did take a small detour through the Painted Desert,

which was an incredible experience, but eventually we arrived somewhere a bit more…

cactus-y? I must admit, the desert is pretty cool – at least in October, when it’s only about 85 degrees! Max and Charlie cannot get enough of the cactus, and every time we drive somewhere they enthusiastically point out each one that we pass. (Which means that if the car is in motion, all we hear is “Cactus, cactus, cactus, cactus, cactus!” from the backseat.)

So, we are living in a hotel while we try to find a house and trying not to die in traffic that’s suddenly about three times faster than we’re accustomed to.

Also, in all the chaos, Tommy and Teddy turned one year old.

Happy birthday, sweeties!

Updates from the Road

Well, believe it or not, we’re not settled yet. We just finished a visit with my parents (where they still rely on … dial-up…) and we’re not through with the relatives yet. In only a few short days, though, we’ll be headed to Arizona!

While we were staying with my parents we kicked my little sister out of her room, and one night while I was looking for an extra blanket I ran across something delightful:

Now what, you may ask, makes a vacant-eyed doll in an ill-fitting crocheted dress delightful? Well, I made it, that’s what. Probably – although I cannot remember for sure – more than a decade ago. You see, I wasn’t always the brilliant pattern designer I am now. (Wink wink, nudge nudge.) When I first started making my little crocheted creations for 4-H, my mother – the only crochet instructor I had – told me how to make the shapes I needed. If you need it wider, add more stitches. If you need it narrower, skip some stitches. And, if you want ruffles – just keep adding more and more and more stitches. I credit my mother’s instruction for my ability to design; after all, it’s what I spent my first crocheting years doing!

Anyway, when I left home to attend college I gave this doll (along with a sizable and stylish wardrobe) to my little sister, who has kept it all these years. Awww.

There and Back Again

…and was it all a dream?

We are now back in the United States, for the first time in years, and…it doesn’t feel strange at all. In fact, it feels so normal that I think that is strange. Everything is so familiar that’s almost as though we never left. Now – granted – we’ve only been here two days, but aside from a tendency to unconsciously use Japanese with people who look as though they might be, and accidentally getting in on the wrong side of the car, it all seems to be going very smoothly. Of course, we are already lamenting the loss of wonderful Japanese customer service, and the sandwiches we got at the Wendy’s in Seattle frankly looked as though they had been sat on an hour before we got them…but we expected that.

Now, we’re off on a driving tour of family members before we head out to Arizona. It should be fun!
