No-Sew Toy Diapers

You know, usually me being a crafty sort of person adds a perk here or there. A fillip, if you will, to our daily lives. But every now and again something simple I can do fulfills the heart’s desire of one of my little boys, and they look at me like I’m some kind of magician.

Such is the case of Blue’s diapers.

Yes, that IS marker on his forehead.

This morning Tommy brought me Blue and one of the twins’ diapers, insisting that I somehow put the two together. Since Blue and the diaper are almost the same height, this proved a challenge. Instead, I threw one together with a paper napkin and some tape, and after jumping up and down like I just – I don’t know – bought him a pony? he ran off to play.

A few hours later they brought it back to me, ripped just enough that it wouldn’t stay on anymore. (It lasted much longer than I expected it to.) Rather than toss another napkin on, I pulled out some velcro, felt, and the glue gun and made a more durable version.

Complete with tail-hole.

This is a technique my mother taught me to make clothes for my dolls when I was little, and I haven’t had the opportunity to dust it off recently. First you take some paper – I like to use brown paper bags – and cut out something about the size and shape you need. Try it on your toy, make sure the tail hole is in the right spot, whatever you need. Tweak it and try again until you have one that works for you. Because we’re using felt and not sewing anything, we’re not worried about seam allowance.

Once you’re satisfied with it, either trace it to your felt or pin it on and cut around it so you have a little felt diaper, complete with tail hole.

Use the glue gun to apply velcro in the appropriate places:

Blue supervises.

And bask in the joy of the little people. (They love their “Baby Blue”s!)

Awww.

Pool (Noodle) of the Fates

Can you believe that they have the school supplies out already in the stores?! I found these light sabers made from pool noodles months ago via Pinterest. I’ve been meaning to make them, but when I went in the store and saw that the pool noodles had been moved to make room for glue sticks and scissors, I knew it was time to do it or wait till next year.

And I think they turned out pretty well!

Unlike the above tutorial, I did not seal the bottom of the sabers because my children just LOVE to stick things into other things and I figured it would be easier to get it out if they were open at both ends. The kids don’t care, though. They think they’re awesome.

I did use a light saber chart to get some ideas for different handle designs, and now the boys can tell you which one of their pool noodles is Yoda’s or Darth Vader’s (we have two different Obi-Wan Kenobi sabers). They wanted me to make Darth Maul’s double-bladed red one, but when we got the pool noodles home the first thing they did was start poking at our (vaulted) ceiling, so I thought it was best to chop them in half as quickly as possible.

Jedi battle!

Use the Force!

They had so much fun. I even dug out our video camera (which we rarely use, finding all the cords was a picnic, let me tell you) and we made a very dramatic movie which you absolutely have to watch, because it cracks me up.

Meet the Newest Mall

We had a new addition to our family this last week! No, we didn’t have a secret baby, haha. We bought a pet!

Say hi to Cumulus!

Maybe this doesn’t seem particularly exciting to you, but let me tell you, we’re psyched about it. Greg and I have been married for nearly ten years now, and we’ve never had a pet that whole time – mostly because of the constant moving. The horrible, horrible moving. But we’re here to stay now, and so we have a pet. He’s a parakeet!

A bit flighty, but still.

We named him Cumulus (nicknamed “Cloudy,” for the children) because the feathers on his belly look like a blue sky with puffy white clouds on it. I should mention we’re calling him a him despite having no clue if that’s true or not. Force of habit, I guess. No girls allowed in this house.

Also, did you know? Cameras are scary.

VERY SCARY.

He’s pretty cute, and he’s starting to warm up to us. Max and Charlie have both managed to get him to sit on their fingers inside his cage as long as they have a millet spray to offer him. (Millet is apparently crack for little birdies.)

Hooray for pets!
