It Works! And Other Wonders

I finished my Swiffer cover! It was extremely easy, very quick, and probably one of the more practical things I’ve ever made. Ta-da!

What? My floors are not ‘gross.’ This is just an illustration of the fact that even regular sweeping is no replacement for a good mopping. The point is, I’m going to need more of these.

It was with this in mind that I went up to Joann’s on Saturday. (They were having a sale!) I wanted to get some cheerful cotton, maybe in hot pink or bright blue, but their Sugar n’ Cream was two dollars a ball! Pshh, whatever – then I noticed that the balls were four ounces. Oh, right. Okay then.

(By the way, do you notice anything different? That’s a brand new table serving as a backdrop. It’s so pretty, and…clean…and matches the chairs…aaaaaaaah. Woohoo Walmart furniture!) They also had a lovely price on Wool-Ease – $1.77 a skein! I love Wool-Ease. Loooove it. So I picked up 5 skeins of this:

I might have gotten more, but I had a heck of a time finding this many in the same dyelot. Usually, when you shop for yarn, they have all of the dyelots together, but at Joann’s they had this color in two different places, strung across four different dyelots. Sheesh, stockers. I love the colorway, though. It’s called ‘Wood,’ and it’s full of foresty browns and greens. I can’t wait to see how it works up – this is for me, people. (I wrote ‘peeps’ there, first, but I guess I’m not really a ‘peeps’ kind of person. Too bad, as I’m very fond of the marshmallow type. Aren’t we glad they started making those for every possible holiday?)
There was one more thing I bought that day (well, aside from new yarn needles, but how exciting is that?). Wool.

This is my very, very first, 100% wool yarn. These babies are doomed to die – I mean, be dyed, and felted, and subjected to all sorts of first-time-around wooly experiments that you just can’t do with a blend or acrylic. Welcome to the stash, wool. I think you’ll like it here.

“Use it up, Wear it out…”

“…Make it do, or Do without.” Ah, how many times were those words repeated throught my childhood? It’s impossible to say at this point, of course, but one thing’s for sure – it’s stuck in my head but good.
It’s in that spirit that I’ve embarked on my next project. (What? I’m still Christmas Knitting. It’s just that round after interminable round of 2×2 ribbing has gotten a bit…wearing.) You see, Greg got me one of these last week:

Which is great fun. But excuse me, disposable mop heads? What, am I nuts? All it is is a vaguely scrubby, absorbent pad that sticks to the head. I think we can do better than that. An inquiry on the Knittyboard yielded several results, but I was most intrigued by this one. Careful inspection of the images will show that the cover is simply a knitted rectangle with the ends folded over and seamed to create little pockets to hold it on. Easy enough! I grabbed some cotton from something I frogged (what? Turns out I’m not a sarong person…although I wore it a few times, and washed it. Pre-shrunk cotton, woo!) and because I just didn’t feel like messing with a new pattern, I’m making my own version. In garter stitch. What? No one avoids garter stitch dishcloths because they’re ineffective. They’re just, you know, dead boring. Hrm. Ribbing – garter stitch. Ribbing – garter stitch. You know, I’m getting the urge to go crochet something. O_o
