(Also, it’s a well known fact that hats with babies in them are like, ten times cuter than hats without babies, and we’ve tried and failed to calculate how much the cuteness factor increases when you place two babies together…)
Almost a week ago, our twins were released from the hospital. In the intervening days, we packed up our little house in Okinawa, shipped our stuff through the mail, and hopped a flight – all six of us! – back home. Max was spectacularly airsick, and the stewardesses (I’d say ‘flight attendants,’ but the Japan Airlines ladies are very much stewardesses) were very sympathetic once I’d managed to convey that it wasn’t swine flu.
It’s very, very good to be home, and we’re all settling down into our new schedule. I’m even getting enough sleep at night to avoid zombie-brain in the morning! However, I am not doing much else aside from just dealing with four kids and a house that’s been empty almost two months. (Big thanks, and I cannot say this enough, to my friends who cleaned it while I was away.) So, I have no new projects, no awesome pictures, and very little interesting content to fill this post.
My spam, on the other hand, has started telling me jokes. I have no idea why. They’re a mish-mash of the terrible and the hysterical, and when I read them to Greg (with a thick fake Russian accent) we both burst out laughing. Here’s a sampling:
‘Here is new joke! Why did the rabbits go on strike? They wanted a raise in celery!’
‘I have fresh joke for you! What do you call a cow with no legs? Ground beef!’
‘Wanna joke? Why didn’t the turkey eat very much? Because he was always stuffed!
See? Spectacular. At any rate, hopefully we can find some time for crafting in the new rhythm, because I have some things I want to get done before the boys grow too big for them.
Hey, did you know that I still have other kids? It’s true! So the other night, while I was sitting in the living room contemplating the future of my babies in the hospital (people say, “Melissa! How are you doing so much right now?!” and the answer is that I have a team of nurses and a medical staff providing round-the-clock care to my twins, and they really don’t like me to spend all day there. I need things to do.) I decided to make something awesome for my big boys.
There’s not much to them – just two sheets of orange felt sewn together in the shape of pumpkins (with a stem inserted) but they sure look pretty.
I also cut little pockets in the back –
and used some purple felt (the craft store here didn’t have black) to make jack-o-lantern face pieces. That way, you can store the pieces inside of the pumpkins, and then you can make awesome faces like these:
Heeheehee. I had a lot of fun making the pieces. My kids and I get along really well. Anyway, Max and Charlie lost no time making their own creations:
Those things on either side of the nose are cheeks. I asked. As you can see, the felt clings lightly to itself, allowing for the jack-o-lanterns to be picked up but permitting easy removal. Good times.
Charlie made that face all by himself, too. He’s getting so big! *sniffle*
Now that I’ve made these, I can think of a million other things to make in a similar vein…watch out, you may see more felt creations in the future!
