Monday Morning Link Party: Holiday Edition

I hope you had a great long weekend. We’re still savoring (and unpacking from) our trip to the Grand Canyon. Do you know what a relief it is, when you’ve been living in 112-degree heat for months, to spend a couple of days somewhere that the high is 84 degrees? You can do things you sort of forgot you weren’t doing – like sit outside for as long as you want to instead of as long as you can bear it, or wear long pants, or leave things in the car without worrying that they’ll melt or spoil (even when you’ve left them in ice). It was wretched coming back from that, let me tell you.

Max's feather

I really love this picture. I think Charlie took it for Max; we let the boys take turns with the camera and some of the pictures are really interesting. Max found these little feathers at our campsite, and decided that he needed a picture ‘to remember them.’ We had all sorts of natural fun; we saw some deer poop (Greg identified it for me, as my thought was “That looks like giant rabbit or goat poo”) and heard and saw some giant crows that reminded me of Japan (although they seemed to go less for the garbage). Max loved the crickets that sang all night. I loved the stars. (The Grand Canyon, being out in the middle of nowhere, has one of the darkest skies around and the stargazing was brilliant.) I also saw at least two bluebirds, a robin – I haven’t seen a robin in forever – and a very bold chickadee who was intent on getting the hot dog bun that fell on the ground. It was wonderful.

Also wonderful? Last week’s links! (You see what I did there?)

Make your own uncrustables from The Creative Imperative

This post from the Creative Imperative about making your own Uncrustables inspired me to pick up the Wonder Bread sandwich cutter and sealer I found at Fry’s. Not very expensive: very effective. The kids have never had Uncrustables and there was a lot of excitement when our homemade version came out. A plus: the square shape wastes less bread.

I think this twig jewelry display from Happiness Is is pretty great, too.

Twig Jewelry Display from Happiness Is...

I really need a way to organize and display my jewelry, particularly my earrings. When you can make your own at the drop of a hat, you start to get quite a collection. I like the twig idea, but I would worry about the little branches breaking.

Uh-oh. Max just caught me looking at this Rubber Band Gun tutorial from Sugar Bee Crafts.

Um. It looks really easy, actually, which is good since Max is now asking me whether I can make one for him.

Finally, check out these Granny Circle Placemats from the Purl Bee.

I’ve seen a few different circle placemat designs, but this is simple and I like it. Also, these are some great instructions for a circle granny, if you’ve ever wanted to know how to make one.
