This was so sudden. One day it’s sunny, warming, with barely a snowflake on the ground – twenty-four hours later, you have this. INSANE. I’m so glad that I hadn’t moved any plants outside, like I had started planning. Speaking of plants, we have some sprouts!
The alyssum is going nuts. This seems to be a good choice of seeds for egg cartons – they are very small (so I imagine it will take longer before we need to transplant), and sprouted within a week.
The zinnias were also quick to come up, and are a little more substantial.
The other seeds to have sprouted are our carrot seeds! (Please excuse the blurry photo, but those things are tiny! I really had no idea that carrot seeds were so small. The boys and I investigated the first little seeds to sprout with the help of a magnifying glass.) The jalapeños and the morning glories are still working – I found a few seeds of each that hadn’t gotten properly buried and I can tell that they are swelling. Theoretically the jalapeños will take a few weeks to sprout. I can’t wait.
Yeah you’ll be fine keeping them in their egg cartons for a while.

A tip for your plants: Loosely cover them with plastic wrap (like Saran wrap). Then put them under a lamp or next to a fairly sunny window.
Doing this will make a greenhouse for the plants and will help them grow since obviously you don’t have the ideal outdoor conditions to plant them.
My mom taught me this trick back in 5th grade when I grew a bean plant for extra credit. I was the only kid who could get those stupid bean things to grow because no one else knew how to make them grow in the weather conditions we had.
Thanks so much for the egg carton/plant pot inspiration, it gave me the reminder I needed to plant out some sweetpea seeds that I had forgotten about.
I miss updates when you do not post for 10 days – I did till enough room in our garder to plant peas – which is now under half a foot of snow.
Haha,the same thing happened here in Cardston, Alberta. I was so excited because I love the snow and my girls were happy that they could get into their snowsuits again and play in the snow. Snow!!!
