Simple Embroidered Onesie

When Ivy was born, I got so excited about having a little girl that I made a number of previously un-doable projects for her. Among those was a simple embroidered onesie.

This is a great way to improve basic 3-pack onesies without too much time or effort, and a few of these would make an excellent baby shower gift (an excellent, inexpensive baby shower gift) with a delicate vintage touch that’s sure to be oooh-ed and aaaaah-ed over.

I just winged the design for mine as I went:

First I made the vine with backstitch, then used lazy daisy stitch to make the flowers, and french knots for the buds. Fun fact: even though I’ve been embroidering for 15 years or more, this is the first time I’ve made really successful french knots, and I did it by following these directions here.

One last close-up!

Obviously you can embroider anything you like onto your onesie – flowers, trains, elephants or what-have-you – but I enjoyed making the flowers and just sort of letting the design grow organically as I added a leaf here, a bud there, another petal over there. Ivy has long since outgrown the teeny little newborn onesie I embroidered for her, but it was so much fun I’m thinking about doing a few more in larger sizes.
